Kris Allen on side-mouth singing, lip-synching, and calling Danny a 'jerk'

You know what's great about the Internets? They are infinite! See, I wrote this article on Kris Allen for the current issue of Entertainment Weekly and had the pleasure of spending a good chunk of Memorial Day with him in New York City. We roamed around Central Park, where he got a kick out of visiting the John Lennon "Imagine" memorial; we hit Rockefeller Center, where a woman not only asked for a photo but requested that he take off his shades in said photo (he obliged); and we rode the subway (F train, direction downtown, in case you care) because he'd never been on one before. (Twas also his first ever trip to the Big Apple.) Problem is, here's only so much I could fit into two pages of the magazine. So I hereby offer you some of he morsels that did not make it into the magazine story. (It's the first of a new PopWatch series we're calling "Bonus Points.") Behold, your Idol sounding off everything from calling Danny Gokey a "jerk" to Christians rejecting Adam Lambert. Enjoy!

On the Idols having to lip-synch for many of the early group performances.
That whole lip-synch thing, we were so upset about it. They were like, "It's hard to blend the 10 voices" or whatever. After a while, we complained enough and Adam's pretty good at taking a stand. We'd be like, "Yeah, Adam! Go, Adam!" He would always lead the pack. He was the first one to be bold and say something [to the producers].

On his (let's admit it, pretty darn adorable) habit of jutting his jaw to the side when hittin' the big notes.
My friends and my wife make fun of me for it all the time. That's [one of] the reasons I can't watch my performances, 'cause I see that and I'm like, "Oh gosh. Don't do that." I don't even know why, it's just a thing. I hate it. But…I've always done it. I've done it forever. I've tried to change it. It just won't happen. It's just emotion—my mouth happens to go to the side. I thought it was so funny when we did the results show and Anoop made fun of me. That was hilarious. They were like, "Is that okay?" And I was like, "Totally! I don't care. It's funny!"

On speculation that he and Adam Lambert painted their nails as a campaign to get a Kradam finale. (i.e. at the exclusion of Danny Gokey)
That's not what we were saying. This is what we were saying: There was this tabloid thing that came out about me and Adam, about how we don't get along because I'm this conservative kid from Arkansas and he's this L.A. liberal guy. Which, I could be nothing less than conservative. I'm just from Arkansas. And they were like, "He's cranky because he misses his wife and Adam's nail polish is all over the place and they can't get along." And we were like, "That's so stupid. That's the stupidest thing." We just didn't want people to think that we didn't get along. Because we're really great, great friends.

On calling Gokey a "jerk" on Larry King Live last Friday, in response to Gokey saying he had picked Allen to win.
That was a joke. Seriously, we're all really good friends and we joke around with each other so much. It just came out. He's like my brother as well. We've become so close. We're around each other so much, we just joke around a lot. I hope people didn't read it differently. I'm sure the Danny haters will. [Slips into a mean, angry voice] "Kris hates Danny!" It's so weird that everyone hangs on to every word you say. But I'm not gonna change. I'm not gonna not joke around with Danny Gokey.

On the PR department schooling the Idols on what they can and can't say on the air.
After Allison Iraheta joked about not cutting herself… Oh gosh. All the PR people were like, "Oh gosh. Oh, Allison don't say that on TV!" There's a couple things that we don't say. She doesn't say "cut myself." I said "retard" one time. When I was talking about myself, I said, "I felt like a retard." Never say that again! And then, I don't say "benches" because it sounds like "bitches." [Allen's slight twang does transform the word into something like "binches," which is dangerously close to "bitches"] I don't say that anymore… until now! I'm sittin' on these binches! [Laughs]

On his frustration with Christians who wouldn't accept Adam Lambert.
There [were all these rumors] about how all the conservative, Christian people that would vote for me hate Adam and never want him to win because of who he is. Oh, it was so frustrating—really bad, because we are really good friends. Why can't everyone get along? It never made any sense for me to judge anyone, who they are. It frustrates me that people can't get along with people because of their differences. And I'll tell you what, especially Christians. Christians have a hard time accepting people like Adam—liberal, from L.A., looks different, maybe acts a certain way. He's a great, great guy. They don't even give him a chance. And it's frustrating because I come from that. A lot of my friends are not that way, which I appreciate, but a lot of people in Arkansas or in the South or wherever are that way. We really hope that our relationship can be an inspiration to people. I could go on about that forever.

Also there's a chance tomorrow to see Kris live and in action! The Early Show tomorrow in NYC at 9:00. It is a taping of when he will be on Friday. But tomorrow you can catch him on NBC's today between 7-11, its not certain when he will appear.

People.com posted an article on "5 Things You Didn't Know about Idol Winner Kris Allen"

They include: 1. He Drives a Clunker: Before leaving Arkansas for Los Angeles, Allen, 23, drove a silver 2001 Pontiac Bonneville. “It’s the most comfortable car to drive,” he says, “but it has a lot of problems. The speedometer doesn’t work; the gas gauge doesn’t work; the windows won’t roll down; there’s something wrong with the gas pedal. But it drives!” Allen admits he couldn’t afford the $300 to fix the fuel gauge — and got stranded as a result. “I’ve ran out of gas a lot,” he says. “Probably four of five times.” Hopefully, those days are over. On the finale, viewers saw season 7 winner David Cook hand Allen and runner-up Adam Lambert the keys to a 2009 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

2. He Married His Best Friend: “She’s been my best friend for a long time,” Allen says of his wife, Katy, who he began dating his junior year of high school. “She’s the coolest chick in the world.”

3. He Said ‘I Do’ In Front of 400 Guests: Allen married his high school sweetheart, Katy O’Connell, on Sept. 26th 2008. “We have a lot of family and friends, and we didn’t want to leave anybody out,” Allen says of his wedding, which took place at sunset on the Arkansas River. “We set out 300 chairs and people were standing up!” At the reception, which was catered by Katy’s grandmother, Allen sang the same song that he auditioned with: “A Song For You.” “We just had a blast,” he says of the day.

4. He’s Got a Sweet Tooth — And Loves Lazy Days: Guilty pleasures? He has a few. “I love Twizzlers,” Allen says, adding, “I love any kind of candy. My favorite TV show ever is Boy Meets World, and my favorite movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For me, my guilty pleasure is that if I don’t want to do anything one day, I won’t. I’ll just sit around, not shower, hardly even eat, and just watch TV.”

5. He Really is Friends with Adam Lambert: “Right before we went to bed [at the Idol mansion,] we’d sit around and talk about the competition, talk about our pasts. We really got to know each other,” he says. “He’s very real. Kris has Five Songs to Chart, iTunes album also.

Although Kris didn't break into the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10, his No Boundaries debuted at #11 on the Billboard. Since people who don't use iTunes may have just figured out his single is in some stores, the ranking may go up by next week. No Boundaries had 134,000 legal downloads. Also other Kris songs charted: Heartless (#16), Ain't No Sunshine (#37), Apologize (#66) and Falling Slowly (#94). His iTunes pass did not debut on the top albums, but his "Season 8 Favorite Performances" on iTunes debuted as #50 on the top albums (selling 10,000). Adam's favortie performances debuted at #33 and he also had four songs to chart.

Media outlets have been going crazy today about AT&T possibly helping Kris' win. However, American Idol and FOX still stand by that the vote was 100% fair and accurate. I just can't wait until the portion of America still grieving will realize Kris is the winner!

Also in Jordin Sparks news, her new single Battlefield debuted on the Hot Digital Songs at #12, higher that the Jonas Brothers' Paranoid at #17!

I don't get Mike & Juliet on my FOX, but it was mostly just a No Boundaries performance anyway, but it was great as usual.

Daily Roundup

Tomorrow the Billboard comes out, and its a possibility that No Boundaries may chart #1, even though it dropped to #2 in the iTunes rankings. Several other of Kris's, runner-up Adam and perhaps other finalists's songs may chart. Lets hope Kris at least breaks the Top 5 in his debut.

Here's an interview that hasn't been seen. Thanks for digging this up KAnation! However, this was right before the finale, not after he won. Listen to Kris dish on wanting to play video games all day without eating and taking a shower, cheesecake, cooking, beginning to sing at church, the "Krmatt" rumors, losing 25 pounds at one time when having mono after traveling to Morocco, and several other things! This is the most personal in-depth interview i've found. It doesn't just cover the surface and everything we've heard like more television interviews, and this was even before he became idol!

The "Thongs" and "Man Chest Hair"

Thats what the current media is buzzing about Kris's comments in an interview, and what someone has dug up from Kris' personal life. TMZ.com first aired that Kris and his wife Katy had on their wedding registry from eight months ago, for a "pink thong". The StarTribune calls it "Thongs.Christianity.Arkansas".. one doesn't fit. However, what is getting the most buzz is when Kris said in an interview:

Reporter: "I read this really funny thing that you had said, if you could change one thing about yourself, you wish you had chest hair. So I wanted to hear a little more about it. Had you just never had it? Are you going to be getting transplants now that you are going to be making good, good money?"

Kris: "Well, you never know. I'm just kidding. But no, seriously. I do have a little bit. This is the weirdest question, by the way. But it's OK. This is a fun one. But it's really patchy and nasty looking. So I want man chest hair."

KRIS' SONGS ARE DOING GREAT on iTunes. He has three number ones: Top Music Video (Heartless), Top Ringtone (No Boundaries) and Top Song (No Boundaries). And keep in mind, these are just the ones he has in the Top 10, almost all of Kris's other songs are in the Top 50! Keep supporting Kris and buy his music, and even better by his Pass on iTunes to pre-order his album!
