Kris Newsweek Article!

An article released in Newsweek just released an article: "How Michael Jackson Helped Kris Allen win American Idol"

American Idol is back! OK, not really. But last night Fox, in memory of the late King of Pop, aired the episode from last spring when the top 13 contestants covered Michael Jackson songs. The show was strangely poignant, especially when Adam Lambert covered "Black and White"—in my opinion, his best performance on the Idol stage—and Kris Allen strummed his guitar to "Remember the Time." As Paula Abdul cooed, "Kris, I truly believe no one knows Michael's catalog better than you." You could even argue if it weren't for Michael Jackson, Kris Allen—who started his Idol career with a performance of "Man in the Mirror"—might not be our American Idol.

But wait a minute. Kris Allen is only 24. He wasn't even born when Michael Jackson released Thriller in 1982. How did Allen, who grew up in Jacksonville, Ark., discover Michael Jackson? We asked him to tell us, and to share how the other Idol contestants reacted to news of Jackson's death. Excerpts:

Do you remember the first time you heard a Michael Jackson song?
I was probably 7 or 8 years old. The Dangerous album came out, and I bought it. It was a tape. It kind of stayed in my tape player forever.

Were either of your parents fans?

I think my dad might have listened to him before.

Did you have a favorite song on the album?

The whole album was good. One of my favorites of his was "Remember the Time," I did that on the show. There are so many good ones on that album. I think that could be said of every one of his albums. Not too long after that, I think his History album came out, with him on the cover as a gold statue. Then I was like, wow he's been around forever and all of his stuff was incredible. I have the Thriller album. I have the Off the Wall album. I have all that stuff now.
Click here to find out more!

What is it about Michael Jackson that appeals to you?

Every time you listen to this music you get this feeling and you always feel good. And as a kid, that's a captivating thing. His music was so easy to get lost into. I remember being 8 years old and dancing in my room to his music. Trying to dance like him, as well. It was ugly, but it was fun.

Did you try to moonwalk?
I think everyone has tried to do the moonwalk, man. And it never works.

What about all the stuff in his personal life: the trial, him showing up to court in pajamas, how he dangled one of his kids from a balcony.
It never turned me off against his music. Because it was always a separate thing to me. There were always things that I saw, that I'd be like: awww Michael, what are you doing?! But when you put his songs on, you completely forget about that. And the nice things was, my parents would see even more of that stuff than I did, obviously they're going to watch the news more than me as a kid, and they never turned me off on him.

The first song you sang live on Idol was "Man in the Mirror." How did you pick that song?
Funny story, I actually picked a song and someone else picked it. So I had to search at the last minute for another song. I was going through, they gave me a list of 1,000 songs, and it was crazy. I couldn't find one song on there that I wanted to sing. Then I took two seconds and thought: if I had to sing one song right now, what would I sing? That popped in my head. I said you: know what, I'm going to run with it. So I did.

Is it true that you mentored the other contestants during Michael Jackson week? I think Kara DioGuardi mentioned something about that.
Probably the person she was referring to was Allison [Iraheta]. Obviously, I'm probably going to know more about Michael Jackson than Allison. Because I'm a little older. He was definitely more my time than her time. I was listening to a bunch of stuff, and I wanted to do "Give In to Me," but I didn't think it would work for me. I said do you know who would really good on this? Allison. I shot it at her. I was like, Allison, just listen to this song and tell me if you want to do it. She went and listened to it and ran back into the room and was like, "Yes! Of course I want to do this."

What can the Vancouver fans expect?

That'll be my first time in Canada, so I'm very excited about going there. I've always wanted to go, and I hear Vancouver is great. The rehearsals have been going great. More than anything, just be ready to have a great show. It's going to be like 10 little shows by 10 different people.

What song did you sing in the "sing-in?"

You know, I think, with the sing-off, it was the first one they did that day, so it was a little bit weird. We did it differently than the other ones, maybe they didn't like how it was done, or it didn't fit in. I dunno. But I sang "Everything" by Michael Buble."

re: little screen time, did he feel like an underdog?

You know, I think you do get aware of that, but I say if it's going to happen, it's going to happen. It never upset me or anything, because it obviously worked out. Besides, I don't have a great back story. I'm just a regular guy that plays music, and I'm married, nothing too crazy about me. I mean, I guess I can be a little wacko, but that's OK. [laughs]

Did he get tired of the "dark horse" characterization?

Actually, personally, I did feel like an underdog. Maybe not like an underdog, but a person that does lay low and is not... you have someone like Adam, who is captivating and very different and uber-talented and kinda stands out, but I felt like I stood out in a quiet way.

Adam was the frontrunner, the odds-makers in Vegas had him winning. How surprised was Kris with the results?

Adam and I both were talking about that, and I think he was thinking I was going to win and I was thinking that he was going to win, so it was like we were both thinking it could go either way. But yeah, it was surprising. I thought it could have happened, but who knew? It didn't matter to us because we both made it to the finale.

Did he stress out in that situation, or let the chips fall?

I didn't stress about winning, nothing like that. I didn't come to win, I came to have a music career. With winning, that does happen, but it was never about that. For Adam and I both it was about putting on a good show.

Asks about Kris being in VA Beach and a possible collaboration with the Fray

I don't know if I want to let that out of the bag... um, we're actually still in Virginia Becah and are leaving today. You know, there is not a collaboration, but I do like The Fray and I'm just doing some work out here.

Any collaborations or duets on the album? What can he say about the album?

I don't know about collaborations. Right now there's nothing in the works. I think the tone of the album is going to be very much like what I did on the show, something that everyone can enjoy, something that comes out having great songs on an album.

most interesting thing when he's googled himself?

I don't google myself. But what is interesting is that, at some point, my wife was the third most googled person on Google.

Dream collaboration?

I think my dream would be Paul McCartney - but that is a dream.

Who from the contestants would he want to have his back in a Zombie Attack?

Have my back? Yikes. So it's zombies, right? Hmm... probably Lil, because I have a pretty good feeling she could beat them up.

OC Register Article!

The Orange County register did an article today covering the Top 10 finalists about to hit the road for the 2009 American Idol Tour. While most articles push and Adam, self-proclaiming his "closest straightest" friend, this article but Kris and his friend Allison Iraheta together!

EXCERPT FROM THE ARTICLE:

BIG BROTHER, LITTLE SISTER
Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta move around the room with the easy comfort of siblings, joking around and poking gentle fun at each other.
"I think both of us have wanted to do this for a long time," says Allen, the soft-voiced 24-year-old from Conway, Ark. "For me since I was 13, and for Allison even longer."
As champion, he automatically gets the biggest career boost, and says he's currently working on picking songs for his debut album to come out later this year.
"We're pretty much in the beginning stages, but I feel like it's going to be a pop-rock thing, kind of what I did on the show," he says.
Iraheta, whom the judges seemed to pick at week after week, sometimes more for her quiet personality than her big rock 'n' roll voice, also has an album deal, and is following much the same course as Allen now.
"It's definitely going to have a rock edge to it," says Iraheta, the 17-year-old from Los Angeles who finished fourth. "It was really hard having themes each week, so the album is going to be a lot more of me."
The tour will take them out before more live fans than the show ever did, and both said the thought of that gives them a bit of anxiety from time to time.
"I'm scared," says Iraheta, who has added streaks of purple and magenta to her already insanely red-dyed hair. "I'm superexcited, but scared."
Allen, who could not be more down-to-earth if he was a farmer, says he's looking forward to the opening night for the memories it will create.
"I think it's going to be one of those moments that you'll never forget," he says. "Walking out there to all those people who are there to see you? It's going to be special."
What they'll sing: Allen says one of his songs in the show will be the Beatles' "Hey Jude," a switch from the version of "Come Together" which he did on the show. Iraheta says she'll be reprising her TV performance of Janis Joplin's "Cry Baby."

Read the rest of the article, where they talk about the Rocker Glam and Tattooed Ma'am (Adam and Meagan), The Piano Man and the Diva (Lil and Scott), The Roughneck and the Widower (Michael and Danny), and the Singing Survivors (Anoop and Matt). This article also gives several of their song selections.

Kradam Collaboration in the Works?

According to an E! Online interview, when asked of possibly recording a song together, Kris and Adam say that it could happen!
"It could happen," Adam told E's Mark Malkin Friday during an exclusive sit-down with him and Kris. "Maybe we'll write a song on the road."

More Excerpts:

No surprise that the American Idol winner and runner-up have become as tight as any two best friends could be. So just how close are they?
They both laugh when I ask Allen if Lambert is his "closest gay."
"As much time as we spend together, I would probably say so," Allen said.
And it works both ways. "He's definitely becoming my closest straight," Lambert said. "That's something I am trying to get across—that it doesn't frickin' matter. Just like when people were dealing with race relations. The moment we started getting over it as a society was the moment we stopped paying attention to the differences and paid attention to the similarities."
He continued, "People get so scared and uncomfortable with the ways in which they are different. I think it's a testament to Kris that he's completely comfortable in his own skin, comfortable with his sexuality. He's a straight man, he's married and it's not threatening for him to be friends with a gay guy."
"I do not have a boyfriend," he said when I ask about the much-speculated-about relationship he has with interior designer and artist Drake LaBry. "I know everybody wants to know, but that is the one area that I kind of want to keep out of the press: my personal love life, especially out of respect to the other person."
But then, a few minutes later, Lambert looked at me and said, "OK, let me set the record straight with you on the boyfriend thing—Yes, Drake and I are dating. You can say that."

Kris: "Adam Isn't Stealing My Thunder." Parade.com interview

American Idol Kris Allen has had a totally different post- Idol experience than runner-up Adam Lambert, managing to stay out of the limelight and off the cover of Rolling Stone.

Allen insists he has nothing but love for Lambert, but he'd rather focus on his music and finally get a shot at married life with childhood sweetheart, Katy.

Will we hear a husband-wife duet in the future?
"She is not a singer and she will be the first to tell you that. She does not like to sing where people can hear!"

Bringing his faith into this mix.
"I want to make music that appeals to everyone. [Christianity] is a part of me, so that will come out. But for me, I don't feel like I want to come out with a Christian record or anything like that. But if you're making music that's about you, then that's going to come out a little bit."

Is Lambert stealing the spotlight?
"Adam is definitely one of those people who garnishes media attention. He's different, and he's something completely different from Idol and so I think he deserves all that stuff. And for me, I'm totally laid back and cool. Being on the cover of Rolling Stone, he had something to say and they wanted to be the ones to say it. That was his way to do that. I don't have any problems with it at all. I think Adam totally deserves it. I don't feel like he's stealing my thunder."

Finally settling into married life.
"It's nothing normal. It's more like the craziest boyfriend-girlfriend situation right now. It doesn't feel too much like we're married just because it's a completely different married life than we've expected, but it's still really good. We've learned that you gotta take things a little bit differently being like this. [if it wasn't for Idol] it would probably be just me and my wife sitting and having a comfortable life, and that would have been fine too. But it happened to work out this way."

Article Roundup!

MTV article about Idols preparing for Tour, talks about the contestants and asking Kris will Katy join him on the tour.

AP article about preparing for the tour.
Excerpt:

Kris Allen, the mellow Conway, Ark., contestant who came out on top, said he expects the tour that begins July 5 in Oregon to be a welcome contrast to the weekly show experience.

"The energy is going to be better on tour," Allen said, and it will be easier to loosen up and feed off the crowd's energy. And, he added, "no one's judging you."

"I'll be with my friends, have a good time. I'm really excited," he said.

MTV article about The Fray's Joe King working with Kris
Excerpt:
But Allen has already spent time with writer and producer Joe King, the guitarist and songwriter from the Fray. Allen performed King's version of Kanye West's "Heartless" on the show, and the pair recently spent two days in Timbaland's studio in Virginia Beach, where they demoed a song. "I'm literally in the studio mixing the rough demo right now," King said via telephone from Toronto (the Fray just began the first leg of their North American tour). "It doesn't have a title yet. It doesn't even have lyrics — but there is a lot of gibberish."

King said there wasn't any romance to how they got together — he simply responded "Yes" to Allen's e-mail. "I didn't even see most of the show because we were on tour in Europe and Australia," he explained. "But I found out he won when we got back and I saw he did 'Heartless,' so I was aware of him when he contacted me."

"It was a very good vibe in the studio. There was no pressure — we just had breakfast, got to know each other," King said. "It was all very organic after that." Though they recorded in Timbaland's studio, the super-producer wasn't present during the sessions. "But Timbaland's brother was there along with his crew, and it added this great energy to the session. When the boys heard the track, they started hanging around." King was happy to get some feedback from an outside source, as well as receiving a killer compliment. "Timbaland's brother said if Timbaland was upstairs and he heard this melody, he'd walk in the studio and say, 'That's a melody.' "

Yahoo! Music Interview

There are times when I've actually felt a little bad for Kris Allen. Yes, I know that sounds weird: How could anyone feel sorry for the guy who won on the biggest show on TV? But Kris spent the entire eighth American Idol season being labeled the "dark horse" and having to prove himself to Simon Cowell over and over again. And although he was ultimately (and some would say unexpectedly) the winner of this year's Idol, snagging the majority of the finale's whopping 100 million votes, most of the media attention--from Rolling Stone cover stories to 20/20 interviews to (YES, I freely admit it) this very blog--has still focused on the "frontrunner" that Kris beat out, second-placer Adam Lambert.

AI Season 8 Album & Other News

Entertainment Weekly reports that Walmart will be releasing the American Idol Season 8 album. Right now the album is set to be "Wally-World"-exclusive. This is the first time a physical copy of some a season's tracks have been released since Season 5. Seasons 6 and 7 were released via iTunes only.

Here's the track listing:
1. Kris Allen, "No Boundaries"
2. Danny Gokey, "Stand By Me"
3. Allison Iraheta, "I Can't Make You Love Me"
4. Matt Giraud, "Human Nature"
5. Adam Lambert, "Mad World"
6. Kris Allen, "She Works Hard for the Money"
7. Lil Rounds, "I Surrender"
8. Scott MacIntyre, "Just The Way You Are"
9. Michael Sarver, "You Are Not Alone"
10. Megan Corkrey, "Walkin' After Midnight"
11. Anoop Desai, "Always On My Mind"
12. Adam Lambert, "No Boundaries"

Seems like Heartless or Ain't No Sunshine would have been a better Kris choice, since Adam got his signature song and songs that Michael and Anoop did good were featured, but She Works Hard for the Money isn't bad.

Also, David Hodges' latest tweet says that he is working on another song for Kris. Follow or tweet David here.

Kradam Billboard Article

An interview today from Billboard.com about Adam and Kris's new works, the tour, who they are working with, sounds they hope to do, and of course: Adam's crush on him.

Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, the winner and runner-up of last month's "American Idol" finals, are doing double duty these days: both are rehearsing for this summer's "American Idols Live" tour while working with some of the top pop songwriters and producers on material for their forthcoming debut albums, each of which are due on 19 Recordings in the fall.

"I've been writing a lot with a lot of different people, and it's going well," Allen says. In fact, sources tell Billboard.com that he's been working with some of the top songwriters and producers, including David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry), Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Akon, Leona Lewis). Allen also hit Timbaland's studio in Virginia Beach to work with Joe King of the Fray, whose take on Kanye West's "Heartless" inspired Allen's own performance of the song during the competition. Allen attended the group's show that evening after the writing session.

Meanwhile, Lambert's recent revelation of the straight boy crush he has on his former "Idol" roommate has left Allen unfazed.

"He was so funny," Allen says. "He texted me that day, like, 'I'm so embarrassed.' I'm like, 'No, are you serious? Don't be embarassed. I think that's hiliarious.' My wife, she's so funny. She was like, 'Tell Adam I have a crush on HIM.' "

"He is something different that no one's probably seen before, at least in a long time. But we're two completely different artists as well, so I don't think either one of us have anything to worry about."

Kris interview with Oprah.com!

An interview from yesterday that was posted today what Stephanie Snipes of Oprah.com did with Kris:

Here's an excerpt:

Stephanie Snipes: How does it feel to be the American Idol?

Kris Allen:
I feel good. I feel like I've been thrown into the craziest world ever. It's a lot of fun. I'm so excited, seriously. I'm so excited to be here.

SS: You have gotten to do a lot of cool things after the win. But, performing at the NBA finals? What was that like?

KA: The Lakers game was one of the weirdest experiences. It was amazing. It really was. I actually had never sung the national anthem, so I was so nervous. I was like: "I can't forget the words. I have to start it right." And then I think I started it too low and I was like, "Crap!"

SS: If you could work with anyone who would it be?

KA: I would love to just talk to Paul McCartney. That would be incredible, but that is definitely like a dream.

SS: What the best piece of advice you received?

KA: The night that I won David Cook came up to me and said, "Sleep." That's the only thing he said. And I was like, "Okay." That was pretty good.

SS: What type of music is playing on your iPod?

KA: The hardest question in the world!

SS: Is it?

KA: Yes! Because I seriously listen to everything. I don't have a whole lot on my iPod because, as a musician, I've just got that conscious[ness] that I have to buy music now, so I don’t have a whole lot. I have everything from Kelly Clarkson to Kings of Leon to Paramore to different soundtracks to freaking Britney Spears.

EW's Slezak critical of 19 Entertainment

In his latest Entertainment Weekly article, Michael Slezak is critical of 19 Entertainment, in the press releases of Adam and Kris's contract signing and debut albums. Here's an excerpt:

And yet, how come I feel like I'm hearing from an eight-year-old boy reacting to the choice of boiled Brussels sprouts or chocolate ice cream whenever I re-read the respective statements that Simon Fuller, Creator and Executive Producer of American Idol and Founder & CEO of 19 Entertainment, made about Kris and Adam? Check 'em out for yourself and tell me if I'm onto something:

"Kris won the hearts of millions of Americans with his soulful voice, good looks and gracious demeanor. However it is his passion for music and love of performing that will make sure Kris stands the test of time and makes American Idol proud."

Vs.

"To find a talent as exceptional as Adam Lambert is a rare and special event. I am thrilled that American Idol was the platform for the world to discover this brilliant young man. He is unique and unforgettable and a certain star of tomorrow."

Let me get this straight: Adam gets slathered with "exceptional," "rare and special," "event," "thrilled," "brilliant," " unique and unforgettable," and "certain star of tomorrow." Kris, by comparison, receives "soulful voice," "good looks," "gracious demeanor," "passion for music," "love of performing," and "stands the test of time and makes American Idol proud." Now don't get me wrong: I'm not saying Adam hasn't earned every superlative his new label wants to throw at him, but why am I having visions of Fuller trying to banish Kris to indie-land after a hastily released, poorly promoted debut? Oh, and anyone who thinks 19 is above burying its own artists should simply take a look at the way the company promoted records from Blake Lewis, Diana DeGarmo, Justin Guarini, and even season 5 winner Taylor Hicks. Which is to say, not at all. (We now interrupt this blog item so I can say for the umpteenth time that Blake's Audio Day Dream was a damn fine record.)

Michael Johns on Kris Allen

Ace Showbiz did an interview with American Idol Season 7 contestant, Michael Johns, and asked him about Kris.

ASB: Which side are you in about this season's Idol winner Kris Allen whose victory was argued?

Michael Johns: I think Kris is great and I thought Adam was good too. I picked Kris in the finale - I just thought America would relate to him more. I think he'll make a good record and have a career for sure. I hope America voted for talent and not what they did or didn't think of Adam's sexuality. I mean come on people it's 2009!

Kris Pics at LA Rehearsal

Pictures of Kris while waiting for Allison Iraheta to show up. When she does, he starts dancing! Lol.

& Other News!
Kris was seen in Virginia Beach, reportedly for a The Fray concert. Since all the tour rehearsals going on in LA, many are doubting that he flew out to VA Beach just for a concert, and that he's possibly working on his album, being that The Fray, Timbaland, Pharell, and N.E.R.D are based out of there and this is were Justin Timberlake recorded his first album. Who Knows!??!

Kris's response to news of Adam's crush

In his Rolling Stone cover story, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert admitted he'd been crushing on his roommate in the Idol mansion, Kris Allen.

"I was like, 'Oh, s---, they put me with the cute guy ... Distracting!" Lambert told the magazine. "He's the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show ... totally my type – except that he has a wife."

Allen's response? "I'm flattered," the Idol winner tells PEOPLE exclusively, "And think it's hilarious."

The duo will have plenty of time to laugh over their missed chance at bromance this summer: Allen, Lambert and the other eight finalists from the show's top ten will hit the road on a 52-date tour starting July 5 in Portland, Ore.

New Kris EW article ; His obsession with Michael Jackson and TLC, playing the viola and being a heartthrob.

Here's a portion of the interview:

On playing the viola
I started playing viola when I was in fourth grade. But it was kind of like a requirement. I never hated it or anything, but it was never something that I loved........

On Michael Jackson and his other favorite artists back in the day
I was a huge, huge, huge fan of Michael Jackson. Almost too big of a fan. He’s one of the best ever. I would sit in my room and put on a hat and try to dance in front of the mirror. All this stuff on my own, never in front of people. I was too embarrassed. I started listening to him and then started listening to a lot of R&B stuff like Boys II Men, II. I grew up listening to that. I love that. [Singing] “I’ll make love to you…” Probably not a good idea [for a 9-year-old kid]. And then I think my next CD was TLC, Crazy Sexy Cool. My parents were totally cool with it -- maybe they didn’t know exactly. They were young and they tried to be cool. [Laughs]

The entire interview.
